We believe the Museum of History and the Future in the City of Turku has to embody Linnanniemi culture and constantly challenge public expectation primarily by staying present and quotidian, activating the urban condition within which it is located. Our vision comes into place with higher consciousness towards local materials, vernacular forms, and finite resources, whilst offering a flexible, adaptable and resilient space that elevates human comfort and well-being; ‘Matkustaja’ defies time by acting as a portal and invites you to travel.

Conceived as an extension of Turku’s city fabric, the building consists of a series of modular timber pavilions arranged around multiple courtyards. This particular design facilitates future horizontal expansion or reconfiguration while prioritising access to daylight and the outdoors. The roof overhangs serve as an artful interpretation of a traditional Finnish architectural detail while shielding the structure and the visitors from harsh weather conditions.

The Museum is in constant dialogue with its surroundings and offers a lens through which to contextualise the ever-changing perspectives Turku offers. The building’s orientation and proposed landscaping create a condition of privacy benefiting neighbouring residential areas while allowing for solar gains inside and in between the built forms. Grand glazed windows on the ground floor offer panoramic views of the waterfront, and on the second floor galleries frame curated views of the historic surrounding built environment. The glazing and supplementary clerestory windows normalise naturally lit gallery spaces, while courtyards and reflective surfaces further enhance lighting levels on the interior. In contrast, darker surfaces encourage the use of multimedia/other visual media in exhibition spaces.

The simplicity of this fully engineered modular timber building belies its groundbreaking innovation. When each component is designed to be as efficient as possible the project sets a powerful sustainable agenda, resulting in an honest design without excess.

DATA
Client: City of Turku
Use: Museum
Budget: €41 Million
Bldg. Dismantled in the late 19th century, the bastion’s memory lives on in the design’s two distinct volumes. These tapered masses will be clad in white glazed ceramic bricks in a nod to Valencian tradition, resulting in a glimmering facade. Both volumes feature strategically located apertures offering carefully curated views of the city and the Mediterranean Sea. Together, they will be christened ‘the citadel’ and ‘the lighthouse.’

Designed to cater to a variety of events, the main volume houses 2,000-capacity, 500-capacity and 300-capacity events halls. Additional amenities include a foyer, a multipurpose hall, a VIP lounge, a press room, dedicated backstage areas for speakers, and loading facilities. Meanwhile, a tower-like structure hosts office space. A key feature of the design is the bridge connecting the two main volumes. This structure incorporates a public roof garden which lends a new public gathering space and connection with nature.

The adaptability of the project extends further still, as a flexible space is hidden beneath the green concourse. Here, parking, additional office areas, and even other amenities can be incorporated based on the city’s evolving requirements. With its thoughtful, adaptable design that draws from the history of the area, the San Carlos Congress Center is set to be a vibrant addition to the city’s architectural landscape.

DATA
Client: City of Alicante
Use: Congress Centre
Budget: €65 Million
Status: 1st Prize, International Design Competition

CREDITS
Architect: LUCA POIAN FORMS + FRADE ARQUITECTOS
Engineer: PROINTEC
Images: BS Arq

The post Alicante Congress Centre appeared first on Luca Poian Forms.

Don Bosco School Centre and Community Hub

admin

timber

DATA Client: Municipality of Brescia Use: School Centre and Community Hub Budget: €14.7 Million Structure: Timber Status: 2 Stage International Design Competition CREDITS Architect: LUCA POIAN FORMS + ELISEO D’ALONZO Images: Internoesterno

The post Don Bosco School Centre and Community Hub appeared first on Luca Poian Forms.

DATA
Client: Municipality of Brescia
Use: School Centre and Community Hub
Budget: €14.7 Million
Structure: Timber
Status: 2 Stage International Design Competition

CREDITS
Architect: LUCA POIAN FORMS + ELISEO D’ALONZO
Images: Internoesterno

The post Don Bosco School Centre and Community Hub appeared first on Luca Poian Forms.

Tartu Downtown Cultural Centre

admin

featured

timber

CRESCENDO Conceived as a threshold between the city and one of its oldest natural resources, the Cultural Centre emerges as a catalyst working to sustain a fluidity across the city to the River Emajõgi. A series of three subtly connected masses set along the profile of the riverbank are flanked by service entrances along Uueturu street and Poe street. Positioned this way the design maintains seamless logistical connections to the city’s transportation network but leans into the porosity afforded by two prominent, outdoor, pedestrian passages establishing physical and visual throughways into the foreground of the Centre. The site thereby extends across the newly integrated Vabaduse avenue up against the shores of the River. The plan reinforces the inclusivity and scale characteristic of a walkable urban plaza and welcomes a programmatic ebb and flow beyond the masses themselves. Carefully informed by the scale and rationality of their surroundings, the volumes gradually adjust in both overall footprint and elevation as their functions change, the former decreasing and the latter increasing, culminating in a Crescendo at the northmost point, the highest elevation, a rooftop cinema and restaurant with spectacular views of the city.

DATA
Client: Tartu City Government
Use: Library, art museum, event centre, arthouse cinema, eateries, workrooms
Budget: €62.5 Million
Structure: Timber
Status: International Design Competition

CREDITS
Architect: LUCA POIAN FORMS
Team: Luca Poian, Anoushae Eirabie, Luciano Preci
MEP consultant: Skelly & Couch
Images: Filippo Bolognese Images

The post Tartu Downtown Cultural Centre appeared first on Luca Poian Forms.

Oulu Museum and Science Centre

admin

brick

featured

TIILIVERHO Conceived as the centrepiece of the new cultural hub comprising the Luupi Museum and Science Centre organization, as well as Tietomaa and the Museum of Northern Ostrobothnia, our proposal is a contextual addition to the urban fabric of the Myllytull district, enhancing the existing urban thresholds and creating an experience that is, at […]

The post Oulu Museum and Science Centre appeared first on Luca Poian Forms.

TIILIVERHO

Conceived as the centrepiece of the new cultural hub comprising the Luupi Museum and Science Centre organization, as well as Tietomaa and the Museum of Northern Ostrobothnia, our proposal is a contextual addition to the urban fabric of the Myllytull district, enhancing the existing urban thresholds and creating an experience that is, at once, memorable and iconic.

Emerging as a monolith from its surrounding context, the museum features a simple and legible massing, its geometry and proportions carefully informed by the scale and rationality of the surrounding 19th century industrial buildings.

On an urban level the careful insertion of the new rectangular volume defines a new public plaza that frames the point of arrival for visitors arriving from Makasiinikatu, while seamlessly integrating with the existing pedestrian network. Here, the building façade gently pleats away as an urban scale curtain, offering glimpses of the various activities taking place within.

The museum’s bold volumetry stands in careful contrast with the richness and finesse of its exterior skin: a self-supporting brick façade designed to provide varying degrees of transparency and opacity, creating a protective enclosure that safeguards the exhibitions whilst providing carefully curated views of the surroundings. By virtue of its geometry, the facade’s corrugated form has inherent structural stiffness that allows it to exist as an independent system, endowing the building with a rich tectonic language.

The careful treatment of the building’s exterior not only harmonises the relationship between the new and the existing, but in fact further enhances Myllytull’s cultural identity by harkening back to the leather manufacturing industry that has characterised the area throughout history.

Owing to its richly layered setting, the museum’s dignified presence will not only make it a beacon for local visitors, but also an iconic part of the tourist experience for international visitors.

DATA
Client: City of Oulu
Use: Museum and Science Center
Budget: €30 Million
Structure: Brick
Status: International Design Competition

CREDITS
Architect: LUCA POIAN FORMS
Team: Luca Poian, Timo Kujala, Luciano Preci
MEP consultant: Skelly & Couch
Transport consultant: Cora IHT
Images: Filippo Bolognese Images

The post Oulu Museum and Science Centre appeared first on Luca Poian Forms.

New Uniud Research Laboratories

admin

timber

Sited within the Rizzi University Campus in Udine, our design proposal for a new university building is a highly sustainable structure characterized by its flexibility and modularity, which will cater to the institution’s needs to deliver a wide range of new research laboratories and learning spaces. This modular approach allows for endless flexibility, facilitating design at a variety of scales and uses: from chemistry, engineering and IT labs to classrooms, and even a flexible space for speeches and events.

Our proposal has been developed to maximise passive solutions to maintain a comfortable internal environment by using the building form and construction thereby minimising running cost and reducing CO2 emissions. The structure will deliberately be on show in the completed building, which will not only save on the need for costly and time consuming finishing trades, but more importantly will infuse this building with an inherent honesty and clarity.

DATA
Client: University of Udine
Use: Research laboratories
Budget: 5 million Euro
Structure: Timber
Status: International Design Competition, 2nd Prize

CREDITS
Architect: LUCA POIAN FORMS + Archest srl
Team: Luca Poian, Lucio Asquini, Massimiliano Travagini, Daniele Degano
Images: Luce atelier

The post New Uniud Research Laboratories appeared first on Luca Poian Forms.

Royal Academy of Spain in Rome

admin

brick

DATA Client: Royal Spanish Academy Use: Art Academy Budget: 5 million Euro Structure: Brick Status: International Design Competition CREDITS Architect: FRADE Arquitectos + LUCA POIAN FORMS Team: Luca Poian, Jorge Rodriguez Donday Local architect: Arch. Once completed, the compressive loads of the building itself lock together the longitudinal and cross beams in a scissor-like fashion, creating an efficient self-supporting system that permanently secures the structure in place. This technique also minimises the number of metal joineries with the aim of reducing unsustainable materials, effectively reducing the building’s carbon footprint and extending the building’s life span. Our choices of material celebrate the structure’s eventual weathering, deliberately minimising the frequency of operational maintenance whilst allowing the building to slowly develop a textured coloration and patina that will help it further blend into the context of Clitterhouse Playing Fields.

DATA
Client: Argent Related and Barnet Council
Use: Sports Pavilion
Structure: Timber
Status: International Design Competition

CREDITS
Architect: LUCA POIAN FORMS
Images: Luce Atelier

The post Pavilion for All appeared first on Luca Poian Forms.

Brick Veil Mosque

admin

brick

BRICK VEIL Sited in a prominent location in the outskirts of Preston, our proposal for a new iconic Mosque envisions an architectural language that is timeless in its materiality and honest in its tectonic approach. Conceived as an elliptical extrusion at the south-western end of the site, our design features an abstract and legible massing that is not only iconic and memorable, but also highly kinetic.
Its most notable feature is its textured brick facade, which is conceived as an urban-scale curtain that pleats away to frame the main entrance of the building. Inspired by the veil-like qualities of traditional Mashrabiyas, the facade’s pleating form has inherent structural stiffness that allows it to exist as an independent system whilst endowing the building with a rich tectonic language.
The materiality and careful treatment of the mosque’s exterior not only harmonises the relationship between the new and the existing, but in fact further enhances the building’s cultural identity by harkening back to the textile manufacturing industry that has characterised the region throughout history.

Responding to the site’s dual-aspect, the building’s exterior pleats away like an urban-scale curtain, framing the main entrance to the foyer and creating a pedestrian passage connecting the park and Finlaysoninkatu street. More than just a museum’s lobby, the foyer is conceived as an urban space that celebrates the public programmes associated with the museum, offering a suite of accessible spaces serving the institution’s wider civic agenda.

A generously proportioned staircase leads visitors to a collection of unique and varied exhibition spaces in levels 1-3. Here, the plan is crafted in a rational and efficient manner to provide maximum flexibility for the display of artworks of varying mediums and scales. Completing the visitor’s experience, Level 3 contains a hyper-flexible sky lit exhibition hall that not only celebrates the building’s structure but uses it as a flexible canvas for the disposition of moveable partitions. Unencumbered by vertical structural elements, this floor is suitable for a wide range of media and events, allowing the building to host exhibitions of widely varied nature and scale. Increased porosity in the building’s brick exterior wall offers glimpses of the surrounding parkland whilst maintaining optimal light conditions for the storage and display of artwork.

DATA
Client: Varma Mutual Pension Insurance Company, Sara Hildén Foundation, City of Tampere
Use: Museum
Structure: Brick
Status: International Design Competition

CREDITS
Architect: LUCA POIAN FORMS
Images: Filippo Bolognese Images

AWARDS
2021 Golden Trezzini Awards, honorable mention

The post Sara Hildén Art Museum appeared first on Luca Poian Forms.

National Log Driving Museum

admin

timber

ARKEN Nested within the unique natural settings of Fetsund and the Northern Island Natural Reserve, our proposal for the new National Log Driving Museum and Wetlands Competence Centre makes a respectful reverence to the surrounding wetlands, the local ecosystem, and the larger cultural landscape of the region. Similar to a biblical arc floating in the water, the building takes on a completely novel –yet undeniably familiar– architectural language, evoking images of the vernacular architecture endemic to these Nordic latitudes, and the centuries-old shipbuilding tradition that has defined Norwegian culture. Owing to its materiality, the building seamlessly blends with its surrounding context.
Hovering above the wetland, the building takes on an almost ethereal quality. Its predominant form– an extrusion of two orthogonal volumes in plan– immediately harkens back to the iconography of a Nordic cross. This robust volumetry stands in careful contrast with the articulated finesse of its structure and facade: a system of self-supporting wood members that interlock with each other, and give way to a wooden rainscreen that shields the exhibitions within. Both in plan and in section, the building celebrates the layering of materials, spaces, and visual experiences– articulating a carefully choreographed sequence that takes visitors from the dense woodland to the banks of the Glomma river.

DATA
Client: MIA
Use: Museum and Research Centre
Budget: 260,000,000 Euro
Structure: Glulam timber
Status: International Design Competition

CREDITS
Architect: LUCA POIAN FORMS

The post National Log Driving Museum appeared first on Luca Poian Forms.

Network Rail Stations

admin

composite

Our design proposes an innovative, flexible, and sustainable prototype for Network Rail stations of a variety of scales, integrating cutting-edge technology as a means of rethinking the passenger experience from the ground up. Acknowledging the pivotal role that railway stations play in suburban and rural locations, our proposal envisions future stations as part of a larger community infrastructure, creating a flexible chassis onto which a variety of contextual programmes can be seamlessly integrated. Rather than creating transient environments, our approach will transform stations into highly inclusive social condensers.

Exploiting the benefits of prefabrication and mass-production, our proposal envisions a modular canopy structure composed of ultra-lightweight carbon fibre micro-lattice and ETFE roofing. Our design aims to minimise material quantities by optimising the geometry of these composite structures to ensure an efficient distribution of forces, resulting in a lower embodied carbon footprint. In order to maximise the ease of procurement and delivery with minimal impact to rail services, the modular canopy units will be prefabricated and stored off-site, and then hoisted and assembled on location following a programme that minimises site possession time and service disruptions.

Designed for a society that is moving forward at an unprecedentedly rapid pace, our design embodies the bold spirit of innovation that has been characteristic of Network Rail history, embracing the future and redefining the role of the station within local communities.

DATA
Client: Network Rail
Use: Station
Structure: Composite
Status: International design competition

CREDITS
Architect: LUCA POIAN FORMS
Images: Liraat Visuals

The post Network Rail Stations appeared first on Luca Poian Forms.

Parco del Lura Footbridge

admin

timber

Sited in the natural context of Lura Park, our design for a new pedestrian and cycling bridge is a modern and contextual addition to the bucolic landscape of the region. Spanning over the Lura Creek Valley, the bridge connects the areas of Manera and Rovellasca while also enabling links with the wider regional pedestrian and cycling networks.

Inspired by a self-supporting system first studied by Leonardo in the 15th century, the design consists of simple rectilinear timber beams assembled without the use of ties. Once completed, the compressive loads of the bridge itself lock together the longitudinal and cross beams in a scissor-like fashion, creating an efficient self-supporting system that permanently secures the structure in place. In our case, the Leonardesque Bridge concept is revisited in a contemporary way through the use of glulam timber, allowing longer spans and enhanced durability over time. This technique also minimises the number of metal joineries with the aim of reducing unsustainable materials, effectively reducing the building’s carbon footprint and extending the building’s life span.

Our choices of material celebrate the structure’s eventual weathering, deliberately minimising the frequency of operational maintenance whilst allowing the bridge to slowly develop a textured coloration and patina that will help it further blend into the context of Lura Park.

DATA
Client: Consorzio Parco del Lura
Use: Pedestrian and cycling footbridge
Budget: 260,000 Euro
Structure: Glulam timber
Status: Honorable Mention, International Design Competition

CREDITS
Architect: LUCA POIAN FORMS with Archest Srl
Engineer: SOLUXN Ltd
Images: Liraat Visuals

The post Parco del Lura Footbridge appeared first on Luca Poian Forms.

Tensile Vault

admin

stone

Tensile Vault is a new structural paradigm resulting from explorations that take advantage of the most recent advancements in stone manufacturing techniques in conjunction with parametric software. As a result, it combines the high compressive strength typical of masonry formations with the tensile strength common in membrane structures. The design takes these tectonic principles as a starting point to unravel the structural and spatial potential embodied by “Scherk surfaces”, a type of minimal surface that achieves a highly efficient distribution of forces.

Utilizing cutting edge manufacturing techniques the stone slabs are moulded in a vacuum to conform to the geometry of the Scherk surfaces. This allows seamless and elegant transitions between perpendicular planes, minimizing the amount of material required for construction, reducing its carbon footprint, and producing a self-supported stone structure that is both functionally coherent and spatially expressive.

The design reinvents the archetypal interpretation of the vault in a way that results in a new and unexpected architectural language.

DATA

Status: Ongoing

CREDITS

Architect: LUCA POIAN FORMS

Client: Polycor

Specialist contractor: Ateliers Romeo

Structural Engineer: Price & Myers

The post Tensile Vault appeared first on Luca Poian Forms.

National Concert Hall “Tautos Namai”

admin

featured

glass

CONTEMPORARY CLASSIC Our design for the new National Concert Hall in Vilnius is a conscious insertion into the natural setting of Tauras Hill Park, complementing the popular Tauras Hill pedestrian climb. Recognising the role that the embassy will play as an emissary of Swiss national identity, our proposal delivers a building that not only reflects appreciation for civic values, but also a profound admiration for the local landscape and architectural tradition.

Conceptually, formally, and programmatically, the project is conceived as an urban-scale filter, sheltering the building behind distinct layers of soft and hard landscape. Our proposal approaches the building’s complex functions and sloping site conditions in a way that prioritises efficiency and security whilst taking on a reverential attitude to the immediate surroundings.

The programme is distributed in three distinct but well-connected functional blocks sharing a common courtyard: an administrative facility, a diplomatic functional unit, and an ambassadorial residence. Located at the heart of the composition, this courtyard not only mediates the relationship between public realm and secured environment, but also provides a dignified gateway for diplomatic visitors as well as a secured programmatic buffer between the various functions of the embassy. Sheltered away from street noises, the courtyard takes on the character of a quiet formal space ideal for official events, offering a visual connection to the outside world and furthering the embassy’s relationship with its natural setting.

By virtue of its solidity and its use of pigmented concrete, the building is reminiscent of the monumentality and colour palette of Aksumite architecture, whilst also drawing references to the monolithic tradition of the rock-hewn churches found at Lalibela and Axum. The result is a building that simultaneously conveys a sense of respect and dignified reverence well suited for an institutional building, whilst also offering a warm and welcoming character that will feel familiar to local visitors.

DATA

Client: Swiss Confederation

Use: Embassy

Structure: Concrete

Status: International design competition. This arrival sequence frames an axial view of the prayer hall: a monolithic stone volume with a grand entrance into a sacred realm. Upon entering, worshippers are received in a space of monumental proportions: a stone-clad hall featuring a vaulted ceiling with an array of skylights, producing a visual choreography of light and shadow. Flanking the prayer hall on the North and South side, two circulation ramps invite visitors to a grand accessible roof terrace offering unparalleled views of the surroundings.
Our design investigates the use of double-curved vaults as a new topological approach in the design of religious structures. Present in a variety of building typologies across the Middle East, the vault is a tectonic element that takes advantage of basic geometric principles as a means of achieving a highly efficient distribution of forces whilst producing a rich spatial experience. Our design takes this one step further by looking at a type of minimal surface known as the “Scherk” surface, generating a self-supported structural system that locally minimizes its area through a network of bridging arches arranged in a modular checkerboard pattern. Our design is thus organised as a series of symmetrically disposed double-curved vaults of varying scale– ranging from the monumental proportions of the grand prayer hall to the slender profile of the minarets. The result is a rich and cohesive architectural language that not only enriches the spatial experience of the visitor, but proposes a new paradigm for the design of sacred architecture across the Middle East.

DATA
Client: Emaar Properties
Use: Mosque
Structure: Stone
Status: International Design Competition

CREDITS
Architect: LUCA POIAN FORMS

The post Iconic Mosque at Dubai Creek Harbor appeared first on Luca Poian Forms.

Network Rail Footbridge

admin

composite

ULTRA LIGHTWEIGHT CARBON FIBRE FOOTBRIDGE Inspired by the latest advancements in automotive and aerospace cutting edge technologies, our design proposal combines the advantages of composite structures with a form-finding approach which aims to minimise material mass through a very efficient distribution of forces and structural optimization. The medium through which the message is conveyed is by the use of carbon fibre composites, a material which best encapsulates the very essence of today’s technological achievements.
Spanning across the rail tracks, a lightweight transparent bridge link system connects the platforms from either side. In aspiring to attain a minimalistic optical imprint the overall assemblage boldly defines the visual presence of the rail infrastructure. The main element of the horizontal bridge assembly is the visually distinctive variable section inclined chord, which branches out from either side of the platform and comes together in the middle of the track. This cantilevering member supports both the functional bridge deck below and the roof vertical supports where necessary. However, in order to minimise the visual impact of the horizontal elements, the whole comes together to form a truss like assemblage. The bridge features panoramic glass lifts and stairs at either end to provide access to the station platforms.
All the bridge components are pre-fabricated in the factory, lifted into position and assembled on site in order to reduce site possession times and service disruption. The overall result is a kit of parts which offers a practical and simple approach resulting in a sleek and distinctive contemporary aesthetic that captures the spirit of the carbon allotropes era.

DATA
Client: Network Rail
Use: Pedestrian Bridge
Structure: Composite
Status: International design competition. The project takes this tectonic principle as a starting point to unravel the structural and spatial potential embodied by a type of minimal surface known as “Scherk” surface, thus achieving a highly efficient distribution of forces. The design consists of a system of CNC routed interlocking stone blocks that conform to the geometry of the Scherk surfaces. This allows seamless and elegant transitions between perpendicular planes, minimizing the amount of material required for construction and producing a self-supported stone structure that is both functionally coherent and spatially expressive.
The design reinvents the archetypal interpretation of the vault in a way that results in a new and unexpected architectural language.

DATA
Structure: Stone
Status: Research project

CREDITS
Design: LUCA POIAN FORMS in collaboration with Nicola Boccadoro
Structural engineer: SOLUXN Ltd

The post Stereotomic Scherk Vault appeared first on Luca Poian Forms.

Holešovice – Karlín Footbridge

admin

steel

THE GOLDEN BRIDGE Conceived as a landmark for the city of Prague, our proposal for a new pedestrian footbridge in Štvanice Island is a contextual addition to the infrastructural landscape of the Vltava River. By virtue of its timeless form and unprecedented materiality, our proposal will respond to local concerns for an outstanding, elegant and striking structure that will enhance the architectural identity of the city.
Spanning across the two districts of Holešovice and Karlín, our proposal builds upon the site’s rich historical context to create an urban passage that is, at once, timeless in its architectural language, innovative in its structural approach, and experientially memorable. Our design acknowledges that bridges are opportunities for placemaking– and, as such, our goal is to produce a structure that is not only rational, resilient, and efficient; but also architecturally sensible.
Inspired by the plasticity and colour palette of Prague’s Baroque architecture, the project consists of three homeomorphic arched structures that conform to the geometry of a Scherk surface in order to achieve a highly efficient distribution of forces. Consisting of an orthotropic steel hollow section, our proposal takes cues from the form, materiality, and tectonic language of the naval vessels that historically navigated the waters of the Vltava River. It is thus conceived as a monocoque steel hull that not only performs efficiently in bending and axial compression, but also draws from local shipbuilding technologies in terms of construction and assembly methods.
The design proposes cladding the structure with sheets of Muntz metal, an alloy of brass and zinc that has been utilised since 1832 in the construction of ships across Europe. In addition to its ability to withstand long-term damage from corrosion, Muntz metal slowly develops an elegant colouration and patina that will evolve with the passage of time. The result is a remarkable structure that will reflect light differently throughout the course of the day– infusing the site with a renewed sense of identity.

DATA
Client: The Capital City of Prague
Use: Pedestrian bridge
Structure: Monocoque steel shell
Status: International Design Competition

CREDITS
Architect: LUCA POIAN FORMS
Structural engineer: SOLUXN Ltd

The post Holešovice – Karlín Footbridge appeared first on Luca Poian Forms.

Yeoui-Naru Ferry Terminal

admin

timber

Conceived as a new iconic landmark in the River Han, our proposal for the new Yeoui-naru ferry terminal and adjoined Marina facilities celebrates South Korean’s richly layered history, tectonic tradition and ethnographic context, as well as the historic relation between the city of Seoul and the river Han. Inspired by the image of a lotus flower weightlessly floating on the water, the building appropriates a highly iconic, easily identifiable form: an undulating surface composed of four symmetrically-arranged sinuous arches, producing a structure that carefully frames views of the adjacent river and the skyline of Seoul.

Programmatically, the building is designed to facilitate circulation of passengers from the adjacent parkland and metro station. Served by a multi-level interchange bridge that spans across Yeouido Park, the building allows passengers coming from Yeoui Subway Station to connect directly with the terminal, streamlining transport connections to the rest of the city. Upon entering the building, visitors are welcomed by a central viewing platform conceived as an extension of the bridge – penetrating the envelope to offer spectacular views of the Han River and the city skyline.

DATA

Client: Seoul Metropolitan Government

Use: Ferry terminal

Bldg. Acknowledging the complexity of the program, as well as the aspiration of interrelating the exhibition with the public functions of the building, the proposal is organised as a series of interweaving vaults of varying modular proportions that run along an east west axis. The scale, proportion, and modularity of these vaults provides a flexible space-planning solution, unifies the programme under one cohesive architectural language, and defines a clear spatial hierarchy throughout the project. Behind the thickness of its solid facade lies a rich choreography of light and shadow– defining spaces that, by virtue of their scale, proportion and materiality, will enhance and dignify the collection on display.
In terms of the exhibition itself, the project recognises the importance of producing a coherent, readable narrative that will allow users to experience Cyprus’ rich art-historical chronology without imposing a strictly linear organisation. Exhibition halls are modulated along an east-west axis, yet incorporate large apertures that allow visitors to seamlessly move laterally between halls. In this way, the building breaks apart from linear organisational strategies, and encourages visitors to engage in a process of discovery. This allows them to produce their own interpretation of the exhibit and, by extension, of the building hosting it.

DATA
Client: Department of Public Works of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works, for and on behalf of the Republic of Cyprus
Use: Museum
Bldg. Inspired by Frei Otto’s soap film experiments with minimal surfaces as well as Felix Candela’s works with complementary hypar shell structures, our design explores innovative uses of bamboo by understanding its mechanical and structural properties, and modulating the material to conform to the geometry of the Enneper surface to produce a self-supported structural system.
A split bamboo roofing wraps around the exterior of the pavilion, protecting it from the elements whilst giving it a rich textural appearance reminiscent of the vernacular architecture of Cambodia’s rural landscapes. As a result, the structure maintains a highly contextual character whilst employing cutting-edge digital tools to optimize both aesthetics and structural efficiency. This will serve as an elegant example of how traditional materials and low-tech joinery techniques can be used to produce expressive structures accessible to less affluent communities in areas with limited construction resources.
The use of locally sourced bamboo minimises the building’s carbon footprint and maximises the building’s lifecycle, in tune with the sustainable ethos of the Building Trust.

DATA
Client: Building Trust International
Use: Pavillion
Bldg. At a glance, its form is not immediately familiar and its sheer scale is not immediately measurable; but its formal dialogue of sinuous curves and austere geometry instantly drive the attention of passers-by in the nearby motorway. A structure that –by virtue of its scale, its sublime form, and its open embrace of the natural landscape– incites bewilderment, reflection, and prayer.

As a symbol of modern-day Christianity, Stelae draws from the symbolism of the commemorative monuments of early christianity, and challenges the architectural paradigms of traditional sacred spaces. It recognises that nature, light, and shadow all play a role in our appreciation of God; and invites a sense of reverence and respect for His creation in a unique and unexpected way.

Formally, Stelae presents itself as an austere monolithic tower: a carefully proportioned structure of brick and mortar conceived as a modular stack of three self-supporting vaults. The curved geometry of these vaults articulates large concave voids that frame views of the surrounding landscape. Reaching vertically towards the sky, the project draws the eye of the visitor up towards Heaven, emphasising the highness of God. Its two large openings frame views of the horizon on four cardinal directions, gazing over the landscape like God’s omnipresent eye gazes over Earth.

As an architectural object, Stelae is infused with multiple layers of Christian symbolism. Its footprint measures 33 by 33 metres, one for every year of Jesus’ life; and its tripartite structure echoes the image of the Holy Trinity. The symmetrical disposition of the vaults in perpendicular arrangement generates a plan reminiscent of the early Christian cruciform, and its two gazing circular apertures stand as symbols of the Old and New Testament.

The landmark is set to last for generations to come. Materiality is kept austere and humble, embracing the process of natural weathering, minimising the frequency and cost of maintenance, and allowing the building to slowly develop a textured coloration patina that will help it blend with its surrounding context.

DATA

Client: Network, The Evangelical Council for the Manchester Area Trust

Use: Monument, visitor centre

Bldg. Behind the indecipherable thickness of its solid facade, the new church of Sydhavn conceals a visual feast of light and shadow: a space that– by virtue of its scale, proportion, and materiality– invites an attitude of reverence to God, nature, and the achievements of humankind.
Similar in formal approach to an early Christian temple, our proposal is driven by the structural expression of the vault as an ideal geometry for the distribution of forces throughout the building, and as the main organisational feature that defines the sequencing and layering of spaces in plan and in section. The structural and spatial approach is inspired by the “Scherk surface”: a type of minimal surface that locally minimizes its area through a network of bridging arches arranged in a modular checkerboard pattern.
In terms of materials, the project deliberately celebrates the use of brick and mortar as a traditional method of Danish construction. Our proposal explores innovative uses of material by understanding the capacity of vaulted brick formations, in this case modulating the brick to conform to the geometry of the Scherk surfaces to produce a self-supported structural system that is functionally coherent and spatially expressive.

DATA
Client: Parish council of Sydhavn
Use: Church
Bldg. On the south end of the site, the building’s façade bends into a trapezoidal funnel that facilitates maximum penetration of direct sunlight during the winter, and minimises summer overheating by doubling as a large brise-soleil that shades the building when the sun is at its highest position.

Spatially, the plan of the building is organised around a central living room that divides the house into two symmetrical wings: one that emphasises public, ‘collective’ functions of the household, such as the kitchen and dining spaces; and one that emphasises individual privacy for the members of the family, including a generous master suite. Acknowledging the site’s frontage within the context of Potsdamerstrasse as well as the preservation of the existing trees, the scheme is located on the eastern end of the site, providing ample public space that extends the program of the piazzetta whilst buffering the sound and traffic coming from the east. The scheme acknowledges the importance of creating spaces that activate the formal axes that exist on site, and envisions seamless visual and programmatic connections that consolidate the visitor’s experience of the Kulturforum.
Conceptually, the building is conceived as a solid mass with two voids carved from within, one along the North-South axis at ground level and another one along the East-West axis on the exhibition levels above. This vertical layering ensures visual and circulatory connections between the Nationalgalerie and the Philharmonie, as well as the Berlin State Library and the Kulturforum. The three-dimensional intersection of these voids results from the layering of these two axes, and creates a large multi-story atrium that becomes the heart of the project. Perpendicular surfaces are blended at this intersection, producing soft curvilinear geometries that stand in contrast to the austere sharp lines of the exterior envelope, and becomes the main architectural feature of the project. More than just a museum lobby, it’s an urban civic space drenched by diffuse natural light—evoking a sense of reverence that one experiences at places such as a Gothic cathedral or a Roman bath. More than a museum, this is a temple for art and civic culture.

DATA
Client: Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation SPK
Use: Museum
Bldg. Similar to the hierarchy of a branch and a tree trunk, the top vault stems from the structure of the bottom vault, articulating two clearly defined axes. The three-dimensional intersection of these two geometries results in a spacious day-lit environment for a foyer, and provides a clear spatial buffer between the two main components of the program: the Visitor Hub and the restroom facilities for park visitors.
Constructed with layers of locally sourced, CNC-routed timber, the shell vaults provide a solid primary structure for its adjoining spaces, which are clad with a more conventional assembly of standardised stud walls. A timber rain screen wraps around the exterior of the building, protecting it from the elements whilst giving it a rich textural appearance—in many ways reminiscent of the vernacular architecture of Britain’s rural landscapes. As a result, the structure maintains a highly contextual character whilst employing cutting-edge digital fabrication methods to produce a richly layered interior.
Material choices for the main shell structure as well as the exterior cladding are drawn from the local vernacular palette, acknowledging the building’s exposure to the elements. Sourced locally in the UK, the use of FSC-certified timber will minimise the building’s carbon footprint and maximise the building’s lifecycle, in tune with the sustainable ethos of the Woodland Trust. Our choices of material celebrate the building’s eventual weathering, deliberately minimising the frequency of operational maintenance whilst allowing the building to slowly develop a textured coloration and patina that will help it further blend into the context of Langley Vale.
Reminiscent of both a rural shed and a catenary vault, the project truly is an architectural hybrid of sorts. It expresses rich, unique, and unexpected spatial qualities with the soft curvature of its structure, in deliberate contradiction of its humble appearance of the outside.

DATA
Client: Woodland Trust
Use: Visitor Centre
Bldg. The chess like pattern generated by the juxtaposition of the lower and upper structural walls results in a multi-sided structure with no rear side.

The interior spaces present a fair-face concrete finish which conveys an “industrial feel” to the design, refined by the subtle play of natural light filtering through the vaults down into the lower levels. As one arrives at the building from the upper area, the geometric folded form of the vaulted bricked roof allows visitors to be channelled inside and be gently led into a unique transcendent environment, an ageless sheltered light perforated space.

The external shed walls support the scenic promenade and are designed to protect the internal space from direct sunlight. The walkway is a most important aspect of the building because it provides the physical connection to the valley below, allowing an extra sensory characteristic to surround the visitor, a transition point bringing the outside in.

The resulting architecture is one which unrolls from the land and unfurls to allow the assimilation of a unique historical environment. A building from the land for the land, a timeless space for the community providing an environment to present and share ideas whilst deeply rooted in its surroundings.

DATA

Client: UNESCO

Use: Cultural Centre

Bldg. In other words, a container that can contain itself.
The form of the building induces a strong emotional impact on the visitors, generating a sense of deep attraction, curiosity, wonder. The distinctive imploded-like funnel shape form of the façade will draw visitors towards the building, curious to see how it continues inside. As visitors move inside, the traditional Cartesian and Euclidean space is negated by the continuity between floor, walls and ceiling -all conceived as one. The exhibition path is a loop that emphasizes the “endless” nature of the form.
The continuity between the outer and inner surface is particularly emphasized by the use of local timber inside and outside the building. The structure is an exposed gridshell exoskeleton formed by a double layer of curved laminated timber beams joint together by a series of steel cross beams. The longitudinal arrangement generates a very dynamic linear pattern that emphasizes the geometry and fluidity of the space. Furthermore, the expression of the timber beams convey a Finnish touch to the design, celebrating the use of this material and linking back to the work of Alvar Aalto and modern finnish design.
Diffused sunlight fills the space through a series of central skylights, illuminating the assessment of exhibits below and creating a soft and light – almost cocoon-like environment.

DATA
Client: Solomon R.
